Peapod NutriFilters

I enjoy going to the grocery store. I like wandering up and down the isles, looking at new foods and brainstorming all the fun things I could make... but because I am gluten free I need to go to the store with a list of items that I need that I know are gluten free. (If I don't, there is a good chance I'll spend a half hour standing in the isle looking up the gluten free status of 4 different brands of BBQ sauce on my iphone...)

I have found that the online grocery store, Peapod, is a great tool for putting together grocery lists. Not only is it helpful for people who need to eat gluten free - it's also handy for people who need to follow other types of special diets.

Signing up for a Peapod account gives you access to a feature called NutriFilter. With NutriFilter, you can set filters for the types of foods you need to find in the store. There are filters for most of the major food allergens (egg, dairy, gluten and peanut), good fiber, low fat, and low sodium. Just set the filter to the type of food you are looking for and when you shop, your filters let you know what foods work for you.

You can add the foods to your shopping cart and either purchase them online or create a list to bring with you to the store. So helpful!!! This is a great resource and it has saved me a ton of time at the grocery store over the last few years!

Finding gluten free food on the go

I know where to go to get gluten free food if I want to go out in Madison. However, when I am traveling it can be semi-challenging to find a restaurant that I can eat at. I recently found a great new app that finds all the gluten free food within a few miles! Check out this article and download the Dish Freely app! It's convenient and best of all, it's free!

Gluten Free Freezer Foods

The popular gluten free brand Udi's has just announced that they are expanding their frozen foods line to include things like frozen gluten free pizzas, vanilla cupcakes and muffin tops. Since these foods have just been announced I haven't seen the nutrition labels, but I doubt these will be 'healthy' products.

Personally, I try to eat foods that are naturally gluten free like fruits, veggies, fish, dairy and healthy grains like quinoa. Not only are they healthier than most packaged foods that have been altered to be gluten free, they also tend to be less expensive.

What do you think? Do you think that people but these types of products thinking they are healthy just because they have a gluten free label?

Gluten-Free, Casein-Free Diet - Help with Autism?

I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was in college (for the first time). I remember going to Barnes and Nobel and running into a book that was called the ADHD diet that claimed that eliminating gluten and casein would help with ADHD symptoms. I didn't think much of it at the time. Years later, I realized I had an issue with gluten and went gluten free - and my concentration improved SO MUCH! I have no idea if it was just because I wasn't constantly tired or if the gluten affected my concentration and I haven't been able to find research that shows going gluten free legitimately helps with ADHD.

To make really long story a little shorter... I've been reading about 'ADHD diets' along with 'Autism diets' for years. This is the first time I have ever seen research that backs up the 'Autism diet' claim. Maybe a study on the effect of gluten (and casein) on ADHD will be next???

Vans... Mmm!

I am in love with these. Some gluten free substitutes don't compare to the real thing, but these are WAY better than 'normal' frozen waffles.
